One of the delegates at the ongoing National Conference,Prof.Akin Oyebode representing Ekiti State,caused a stir when he suggested Nigeria should change its name to United States Of Songhai.(USS)
In his words:
He said: “I propose that we change the name of Nigeria to United States of Songhai just like Nkruma changed Gold Coast to Ghana.”
The lawyer and radical, further said that the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, aptly said the country is running 'feeding bottle' federalism.
He drew the attention of his fellow delegates to the fact that the conference is running
without legal backing, saying: “We have embarked on a voyage without a compass.”
The conference, he added, should consider the issue of fiscal federalism, true federalism, resource control or self determination.
I would welcome a change of name not that i think its the most important thing right now..but i will rather another name.Songhai from what i remember is more withing Niger Republic and the old Upper Volta,now known as Burkina Faso..lets find a name within Nigeria and that means something to Nigeria or our culture..but we know it won't happen lol
