Brenda Fassie was the South African superstar who took the music world by storm in the 80s.She was dubbed the "Madonna of the townships".She had so much success and sold so many records and had many sold out shows. But controversy and  destruction trailed Brenda Fassie who was described as the wild woman of South African music.Drugs and drinks were never too far away.Broken marriage, sexual scandals..were all a common thing with Faasie.

In 1995, Fassie she totally hit rock bottom. She was found in a hotel room, in a drug-induced haze - lying next to the body of her lesbian lover, Poppie Sihlahla, who had died of an apparent drug overdose.
Brenda Fassie booked herself into a drug rehabilitation centre. It was a new start that confounded her critics. Memeza was South Africa's best-selling album of 1998 - and that same year, Fassie scooped the Kora Award for best female artist. It is from that period that i am bringing you this interview
from Ovation Magazine in 1999.Brenda Fassie was just basking in the glory of that wonderful night when she triumphed at the Kora Awards.

She was interviewed at her home by Ayo Animashaun for Ovation Magazine series 18 1999.It's an interview you will enjoy where Brenda reveals a lot about herself.
Sadly Brenda Fassie never really won her battle with drugs and alcohol, and her visits to the rehab clinic continued.
Inevitably, she was rushed to hospital with breathing problems, that led to an asthma attack and then cardiac arrest.
As her family sat in vigil around her bedside, fans besieged the clinic and Fassie was visited by former President Nelson Mandela, his former wife Winnie, and current President Thabo Mbeki.

Brenda Fassie died on 9th of May 2004, leaving behind an only son, Bongani.
She had suffered brain damage as a result of her heart attack.
She had been at the forefront of South African music for some 20 years.
In a statement, President Thabo Mbeki said she had been "a Pan-African griot, making souls rise in bliss wherever her voice reached.
RIP Brenda Fassie..we remember you fondly..enjoy the interview.
