Stephen Keshi has finally shed a light on why he is leaving the Super Eagles.Fans have been bemused at why he retired from the Super Eagles on the very day Nigeria was knocked out, even though most of the same fans had been calling for his head earlier.
In an exclusive interview with the CableNG, Keshi gave an insight into why he is leaving the team saying: “Yes. I have done my bit. I am tired of all the intrigues and backbiting and insinuations I get. The criticisms are nothing really because even siblings criticise each other.
“In this job sometimes it goes overboard and my family and those of my players
get called names. I have had to tell the players many times to ignore those criticisms and just focus on the tasks at hand,” he said.
When asked if it was remotely possible that he stays considering the fact that he is still loved by many Nigerians, Keshi expressed his doubts saying: “The same ones who were calling for my head after the Iran match? That “the World Cup is too big for Keshi”? I know there are many who truly support what we have been trying to do over these past months but I just cannot continue in this job anymore.
“To start with, my contract ended with the last match and the Federation never approached me for a renewal. What does that say? It says to me I’m not wanted. I am going to go and rest, spend some time with my family and then hopefully get another job where I am wanted.”
Keshi leaves the Super Eagles as the most successful Nigerian coach in the last 20 years.Keshi won the Nations cup for Nigeria after 19 years and also took Nigeria past the 2nd round of the world cup for the first time since 1998! Not only that "Keshi also led Nigeria to her 1st victory in the world cup since 1998".
Then there is the case of the home based Super Eagles who have never qualified for the home championships,Keshi not only qualified but took them to third place in the tournament.
Keshi has his short comings in some fields, but all in all he has been a very successful coach and will be remembered in the history of Nigerian football.Who knows? The powers that be might still be able to persuade Keshi to stay. But the gist for a while is Keshi has already signed for South Africa's Bafana Bafana boys.
