I'm afraid if you are a Ghanaian who got light through the help of skin lightening creams, you might have to explain to your friends why you have suddenly gone dark!
The Food and Drugs Authority has announced that from next year, all cosmetic products containing the skin bleaching ingredient hydroquinone would be banned. According to the Authority’s Head of Communication, James Lartey, the ban would take effect from August 2016. “Concerning skin lightening products, we are saying that from August 2016, all products containing hydroquinone will

not be allowed into the country. From 2016 the acceptance for skin lightening products is going to be zero,” Lartey told Starr News’s Lambert Atsivor in an interview. Formerly Ghana allowed two percent of the bleaching substance to be used in creams, despite research having showed it can act as a cancer causing chemical. Hydroquinone has been banned in the European Union, the United States, and many other advanced nations for a while now.
